The question marks before your first order – completely normal
Every successful second-hand clothing reseller was once exactly where you are now: standing before their first wholesale order, full of uncertainty. How large should it be? Which category? What if it doesn't sell? How do I calculate the profit? These aren't bad questions – they're the right questions. Whoever asks them starts out prepared.
In this article, we've collected the 10 most frequently asked questions before a first order – and we give a specific, honest answer to each one. Not theory, but experience: we've seen what works with a first order, and what mistakes people commonly make.

The 10 questions and answers
QUESTION 1
How large should the first order be?
30-50 kg is the ideal starting point. This is enough to gain real experience with sorting, listing, and selling – but not so large that a misstep causes a massive loss. Below 30 kg there is barely enough to sort and learn from. Above 100 kg, without prior experience, stock can easily stall and tie up your capital. With your first order, optimise for learning, not maximum profit.
QUESTION 2
Which category should I choose for my first order?
Extra category is the best choice for beginners. Extra is pre-sorted, mid-range in base price, and has medium-to-fast turnover – in short, it's predictable. Cream is higher quality but more expensive and slower-moving. A+ gives more pieces but at a low individual price and requires large volumes. Originál is the riskiest: mixed quality, high sorting demand, only worthwhile with experience. Also read our
guide on categories.
QUESTION 3
How do I calculate the expected profit?
A simple example with Extra category: 50 kg × 2,500 HUF/kg = 125,000 HUF investment. Extra category yields ~6 pcs/kg → 300 pieces. Average selling price on Vinted: 500–800 HUF/pc. Revenue: 150,000–240,000 HUF. Profit: 25,000–115,000 HUF. The actual figure depends on the selling price, turnover speed, and sell-through rate. Find the detailed calculator and benchmarks for all categories in our
pricing guide.
QUESTION 4
Do I have enough space for storage?
A 50 kg bale unpacked takes up roughly 4-5 large IKEA bag equivalents of space. Once sorted and organised, this shrinks back down to the size of a small wardrobe. You don't need a separate warehouse at the start – a corner of a room, a pantry, or a wardrobe is sufficient. What matters is not the size, but the system. We wrote in detail about efficient storage in our
storage guide.
QUESTION 5
Which platform should I sell on?
Vinted is the first platform to register on. Free listings, a large buyer base, built-in courier service – it's the easiest place to start. Facebook Marketplace is a good supplement for local sales and quick turnover. A flea market is worth trying if there's one nearby. A webshop is only recommended after you have experience and stable turnover. In our
article comparing platforms, we analyse every platform in detail.
QUESTION 6
What will I need for shipping?
On Vinted, shipping is built in – you just pack the item and Vinted arranges the courier on your behalf (MPL, DPD, GLS). All you need is packaging materials: plastic bags in multiple sizes, bubble wrap for shoes and fragile items, and adhesive tape. Initial investment: around 3,000–5,000 HUF is enough for the first month. Don't buy too much upfront, as you'll quickly discover which bag sizes you actually need.
QUESTION 7
How will I photograph the items?
Phone + white wall + natural light = perfectly sufficient to start. You don't need a camera, a studio, or a premium backdrop. A cheap IKEA rail (~2,000 HUF) for hanging garments and a corner by a window – that's the foundation. Most importantly: photos should be clean, well-lit, and informative. You'll find everything about photography technique in our
photography guide.
QUESTION 8
How much time do I have each day for selling?
Sorting is a one-time task: ~3-4 hours for 50 kg. Listing is ongoing: 2-3 minutes per item, so if you upload 10 items a day, that's ~30 minutes. Packing and posting averages 30-60 minutes per day when sales are regular. Overall, 1-2 hours per day is sufficient for steady management – this is sustainable even as a side activity. Many people start part-time and only switch to full-time once turnover and financial stability allow it.
QUESTION 9
What if not every item sells?
This is normal – and manageable. In the first month sales are slower because you don't yet have reviews (buyers are more cautious). After 3-4 weeks things pick up. If an item hasn't sold after 3 weeks, drop the price by 20-30%. If it still hasn't sold after 2 months, there are two routes: flea market (quick stock clearance) or donation (may be tax-deductible). Don't panic in the first two weeks – most resellers look back and say the first month was the slowest.
QUESTION 10
How do I request a Video Check guarantee?
The
Video Check guarantee means you receive a video of the goods before ordering – you can see the actual items, quality, and quantity before you decide. It is especially recommended for a first order, when you don't yet know exactly what to expect from a given category. Requesting it is simple: get in
touch with us, let us know which product you'd like to see, and we'll send the video. This minimises risk and maximises confidence.
Category comparison – for beginners
Before you decide on a category, it's worth reviewing the most important factors side by side. This helps you find which one suits your situation best.

Realistic expectations – what to look for in the first month
Week 1-2
Sorting, photographing, listing
Few sales – this is normal. You don't have reviews yet and buyers are cautious. Focus on good photos and precise descriptions.
Week 2-4
First buyers, first reviews
After the first positive reviews, turnover picks up. Every sold and well-reviewed item increases your profile's credibility.
Month 2-3
Accelerating turnover, system takes shape
If you list regularly, traffic grows visibly. Now is the time to start planning your next order.
IMPORTANT
Don't give up in the first month! Most failed reselling attempts fail because people get scared by the slow turnover of the first few weeks and quit. Turnover grows in proportion to the number of reviews – it requires patience, but it's worth it.
Concrete calculation – 50 kg Extra category
125,000 HUF
Investment (50 kg × 2,500 HUF/kg)
~300 pcs
Expected item count (6 pcs/kg)
500-800 HUF
Average selling price/pc on Vinted
25-115k HUF
Expected profit range
The actual figure varies depending on the sell-through rate. For a first order, realistically count on a 70-80% sell-through rate in the first 2 months. The remaining 20-30%: will sell with a price reduction, go to a flea market, or carry over to the next season. For detailed calculators and benchmarks for all categories, read our pricing guide.
Frequently asked questions about the first order
Is it worth starting with a smaller quantity as a test?
An order below 20-25 kg isn't really suitable for gaining real experience – there are too few items to develop a system. The 30-50 kg range is the ideal compromise: large enough to learn everything, but small enough not to be risky when starting out.
Will I get help with my first order?
Yes. Our
Video Check guarantee is exactly for this – you can see the goods before ordering. If you have questions about the category, the calculation, or shipping, our team is available on the
contact page.
When will I receive my order after dispatch?
Depending on the carrier and location, 1-3 business days. You can find the shipping terms and current deadlines on the
shipping page.
Do I need a registered business for the first order?
A registered business is not mandatory to get started, but if you expect regular income, it's worth looking into sole trader or simplified tax (KATA) options. Tax obligations fall under personal financial advice, which we don't provide – but you don't need to set up a company immediately just to place your first order.
What happens if the goods are not what I expected?
This is one of the most important reasons we recommend the Video Check guarantee before your first order. If you saw the goods on video before ordering and they matched the description, there are no surprises. If a question does arise, get in touch with us – we always try to find a solution.
How much money should I invest to get started?
You can start from around 50,000–80,000 HUF (approx. 20-30 kg). The ideal first order is an investment of around 100,000–150,000 HUF (30-50 kg). This amount is sufficient for learning, but doesn't represent a serious risk if things don't come together perfectly in the first round.
How many items can I realistically sell in a month?
In the first month, 30-60 items is a realistic target if you dedicate 10-15 minutes a day to selling. As reviews accumulate, this can grow to 60-100 items per month by the second or third month. Daily listing volume and photo quality are the two most important variables.
What kind of reviews do new Vinted sellers receive?
Until you have 5-10 reviews, buyers tend to be more cautious. This is why, in the first month, it's worth listing at slightly lower prices – a lower price attracts first-time buyers who then leave reviews, which starts building trust. After your first 10 positive reviews, sales typically accelerate.
Is it worth splitting the first order with someone?
If you know someone else who is also interested, a joint order can be a good idea – it halves the investment and the risk. However, agree on the sorting and division in advance. If the split is based on condition (better items / weaker items), it's important to do the sorting together.
What is the difference between B2B (wholesale) and B2C (retail) selling?
B2B: you buy from us (wholesale), then sell to buyers at B2C (retail) prices. The difference between the purchase price and the selling price is your profit margin. With a B2B order you receive an invoice; with B2C sales you are the seller – so it's important to keep an eye on tax obligations if your income becomes regular.
5 things most beginners regret not doing from the start
- Didn't request a Video Check guarantee – and was caught off guard with their first order
- Placed too large a first order – stock got stuck and capital was frozen
- Started with Originál instead of Extra – and the sorting process killed their enthusiasm
- Didn't set up a storage system – items went missing and stock got mixed up
- Gave up in the first month – right when things were about to take off
